Should I try Cannabis Microdosing?

Cannabis Microdosing

You may have read about microdosing THC recently or heard about it from friends, family or even your doctor.  Microdosing has been gaining popularity recently as an effective way to treat a wide variety of medical conditions.  So what exactly is microdosing and are you a cannabis user who may benefit from giving it a try?  As the name suggests, microdosing is consuming a very small quantity of cannabis, specifically THC, as a way of treating a medical condition.  You don’t have to have a diagnosed medical condition to reap the benefits of cannabis microdosing as we will explore other reasons it is beneficial.

Medical Conditions that can be treated by Microdosing

Naturally you should talk to your doctor about your specific medical condition and also make sure to check if any pharmaceutical drugs you are taking may be affected by cannabis.  Once you have the go ahead from your doctor,  cannabis, THC, microdosing can be used to manage pain and in fact small doses may be more beneficial than larger doses of THC in terms of controlling pain from cancer according to this 2012 study.  Other medical conditions that can be significantly helped with cannabis microdosing are depression, anxiety, PTSD, Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn’s Disease, just to name a few.  Additionally microdosing is gaining a positive reputation as an excellent method of achieving focus and enhancing creativity as well as working wonders for insomnia.

Why Microdosing is Preferred over Higher THC Cannabis

As most people that have consumed cannabis even once or twice but especially daily users know well, side effects are a real issue for some consumers. By ingesting cannabis, specifically THC in very small quantities, any negative side effects are basically non-existent.  Side effects that can potentially cause problems for medical users are dry mouth, dry eyes, even an increased appetite can be problematic for certain patients, particularly those with Crohn’s Disease.  The most problematic side effect for many medical cannabis patients is surprisingly, the feeling of being high.  As a recreational cannabis user, that is pretty much the whole point of consuming cannabis but for so many medical patients, the idea of feeling too high is a reason to forego even trying cannabis at all.  That is why cannabis microdosing is a perfect solution for those folks, the benefits without the unwanted side effects.

How to Get Started with Microdosing

If you are a current cannabis user, recreational or medical, it is best to start microdosing fresh.  This means stopping all cannabis use for at least 48 hours to give your system a chance to reset.  Once you are ready, start small, that’s why it’s called microdosing after all.  A good place to begin is between 1 and 2.5 milligrams.  Continue with the same dosage for 3 days, paying close attention to any changes in your condition, positive or negative.  You can increase the dosage after the 3 days if you feel you are not getting enough of the THC benefits, but do it in small 1 milligram increments, waiting 3 days before making any further increases.  If you choose to use edibles or tinctures to microdose, getting the amount spot on is fairly easy however if you are a cannabis smoker or like to vape, it’s more of a challenge but not impossible.  If you are smoking flower, go with a mid-range cannabis with about a 15% THC percentage to start.  Pack a medium sized bowl and take just one hit from the bowl, not a super big bong clearing hit, just a moderate hit.  Now wait about 5 minutes and see how you feel.  Most likely one hit should be all you need to get the benefits of THC without the high.  This way of microdosing is obviously imperfect when it comes to getting the dosage right but all microdosing, regardless of the method, takes some trial and erro to get the dose you want and need.

Favorite Famous Cannabis Connoisseurs – Part 1

Celebrities That Smoke Weed

Hollywood and the music industry have plenty of cannabis users.  Some of them are well known celebrities who are proud to announce their enjoyment of cannabis to the world while others prefer to keep their love of cannabis private for a variety of reasons.  Being a celebrity makes having a private life difficult and anything you do, good or bad, seems to find its way into the media where lives are judged and in some cases, careers affected.  The famous stoners below have been very open about their cannabis use, their love of getting high and in some cases have become involved with the politics of cannabis legalization.  Celebrity endorsement of legalization is important as it gets the issue more publicity.  Take a look at our favorite famous celebrities that smoke weed and see if your favorite made the list.

Snoop Dogg

From the beginning of his rap career with Dr. Dre and with the release of his solo album in 1993 Snoop Dogg has been very open about his use of cannabis and the cannabis lifestyle in general.  He may be one of the most recognized celebrities that smoke weed. He does hold a medical marijuana card in California and as a migraine sufferer, has found real relief by using cannabis to treat his migraine pain. Snoop Dogg has had a kind of a love hate relationship with cannabis, announcing way back in 2002 that he was going to stop all cannabis use.  That announcement was short lived, he was back to being a cannabis connoisseur pretty quickly.  It is rumored, only a rumor, that by 2013 Snoop Dogg was smoking upwards of 80 blunts a day,  Hopefully he is now mixing in some edibles with the help of his friend Martha Stewart, as smoking that much cannabis would be tough on the lungs every day.  Blunts, bongs, pipes or edibles, Snoop Dogg is a very cool and talented cannabis connoisseur.

Willie Nelson

The literal OG of cannabis connoisseurs, Willie Nelson, a country western singer and actor, has been open about his love and use of cannabis for decades.  Recently former President Jimmy Carter admitted that Willie Nelson and his son got high on the roof of the White House, back when he was President.  Willie Nelson has been attempting to educate his fans and politicians about the benefits of cannabis for years and is heavily involved with efforts to legalize cannabis for both medical and recreational use at the federal level.  He is currently the co-chair of the advisory board for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). After years of smoking both cigarettes and cannabis, Willie Nelson had to make the decision to quit one for health reasons.  The decision was an easy one to make for him, he quit cigarettes and switched to vaping cannabis to keep his lung problems from getting worse. As Willie Nelson has been arrested multiple times in several states for possession of marijuana, he is a huge supporter of recent states’ decisions to pursue not only decriminalization but also record expungement for cannabis possession. Willie Nelson has been right about the benefits of cannabis all along!

Seth Rogen

There is a reason why Seth Rogen plays such a convincing stoner in movies such as Pineapple Express and Knocked Up, he is a self-admitted stoner.  He is another one of the most recognized celebrities that smoke weed. Seth Rogen is an actor who is originally from Canada and has been open about his cannabis use for years.  It is even rumored that he likes to toke up before getting into character for various roles.  Seth Rogen also likes to share and keep things social when it comes to his status as a cannabis connoisseur.  He prefers to get high with friends and that includes some other pretty famous stoners like Jonah Hill, Dave Chappelle and of course our favorite stoner, Snoop Dogg.  When it comes to movies and cannabis, Seth Rogen prefers to be high when watching new movies or old favorites and has been known to organize screenings in venues where it is possible for everyone to enjoy cannabis during the movie.  What an amazing friend! Most recently Seth Rogen has launched his own cannabis brand in Toronto Canada along with a close friend and longtime film collaborator Evan Goldberg.  No doubt the cannabis will be top shelf!

Matthew McConaughey

It is fitting that Matthew McConaughey got his big break in a film called Dazed and Confused in 1993.  His star has been on the rise ever since and in addition to earning himself an Oscar, he has earned himself the reputation for being a cannabis connoisseur.  Well known for taking on more challenging acting roles in recent years, Matthew McConaughey is also involved with several charities.  All cannabis connoisseurs have good stoner stories, and although it is likely Matthew McConaughey has quite a few, one of the best ones goes all the way back to when he was king of the romantic comedies, in 1999. Apparently in addition to being a great actor, he is also a drum fan and was once arrested for playing the bongos naked after getting super baked.  It seems a neighbor did not like the noise and called in a complaint and Matthew McConaughey was taken into custody for disturbing the peace.  No word on if he also faced a possession charge but what kind of neighbor has a problem with naked Matthew McConaughey?  In 1999?  Insanity!  Hopefully now he is enjoying more quiet cannabis sessions or at least has nicer neighbors.

Psychology of a Modern Day Stoner

cannabis lifestyle

Gone are the days of the stereotypical stoner who sits in his mom’s basement for decades without a job or a direction in life.  Yes those stoners do still exist but with so many states in the US and countries legalizing cannabis, there are many types of people who have embraced the cannabis lifestyle for a variety of reasons.  These modern day stoners have little in common with the negative stoner stereotypes however they do often share similar cannabis lifestyle psychology traits that make them generally good people to be around.  Whether you’re a stoner, you have a partner who is or your friends embrace the cannabis lifestyle.  See if the traits below apply to you or to them.

Most people who enjoy and have the cannabis lifestyle psychology traits are resilient folks.  Being resilient is more than just being strong or tough at all times.  It goes far deeper than that.  True resilience is the ability to bounce back when things are not going your way and to overcome obstacles or at the very least, to maneuver around obstacles.  For example, if you go to college and work hard and earn a degree, then you graduate and can’t find work in your field, then what?  Some people become angry and believe the world is against them and they are destined for failure.  People that are resilient take the skills they learned and find a new direction to pursue.  Why are stoners resilient?  Of course each person has their own reasons but generally overcoming negative stereotypes associated with the cannabis lifestyle and thriving in the ever evolving world of legalized cannabis is true resilience.

Stoners are a curious group.  The love of new experiences is one of the cornerstones of learning and so that also makes stoners great learners.  Being curious really means being open to new ideas and experiences and those qualities are such a big part of the cannabis lifestyle.  From trying new strains of cannabis to switching up delivery methods to growing your own cannabis.  There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to cannabis, no matter how you view it, stoners are figuring things out all the time that can’t be easily learned from picking up a book or checking out a website.  Without a healthy dose of curiosity stoners would settle into the same routine day after day.  Not to say that is a bad way of life, it’s just not the cannabis way of life.

Some stoners are obviously creative people.  They are artists, musicians or writers and have incorporated cannabis into their creative process in a way that enhances both the buzz and their creative talents.  Other stoners who claim not to be creative have perhaps not realized what their creative potential truly is and for some people that takes time and encouragement.  For example if you grew up in an environment where your attempts to express your creativity were not supported, you may have come to believe you are just not very creative.  Once you change the environment and find a community that supports your creative pursuits, the cannabis community for example, it will be much easier to explore your own creative ideas without fear of judgment.

Introvert vs. Extrovert

If you asked 100 stoners to identify themselves as either an introvert or an extrovert, you may get some definitive answers but you are likely to get a lot of “it depends” as an answer.  There is good reason for this, most stoners have the adaptability to sometimes embrace their extrovert qualities and other times their introvert qualities depending on the situation they are in and who else is around.  Consuming cannabis on the regular seems to give people the ability to read and assess a situation and adapt accordingly.  This ability is one of the most useful stoner qualities as it can be used around work colleagues, difficult family members or even with strangers in awkward situations.  This innate understanding is a very impressive cannabis lifestyle psychology skill and usually is the result of stoners finding themselves in some strange situations and over time, learning how best to modify their behavior and responses to keep things chill.  For those who enjoy the cannabis lifestyle, chill is the default place to be.

Cannabis Quarantine Prep

cannabis use during quarantine

As winter closes in on us, and warnings of Covid surges in nearly every state in the US and quite a few other countries as well, it may be time to think about preparing for a stricter quarantine.  For many people that simply means making sure your household is stocked up in the kitchen and bathroom but for cannabis connoisseurs, a lengthy quarantine entails some additional preparation.  Unlike the spring quarantine, this one is going to be tougher for most folks because nearly everyone is suffering from lockdown fatigue and the weather in many places will not be as inviting for those short sanity walks that were so necessary in the spring. Here are some tips to be ready for cannabis use during quarantine.

Stock Up

While it may not be financially possible to stock up on cannabis to get yourself comfortably through the next few months, you can make sure you have as much weed as your budget allows.  There will be days when you will just consume more cannabis than others so keep that in mind as you plan a stock up trip to your favorite dispensary.  Diversify your purchases as well.  Even though you have your favorite strains and plan to stick mostly with those, consider adding a few new items to the list to keep your cannabis sessions exciting.  Pick up a few edibles as well because you never know what your mood will be from day to day.  Also it’s important to make sure you have plenty of rolling papers and cleaning supplies for your glass if you use a pipe, bong or dab ring.  Keep plenty of spare lighters in your stash box and if you are one of those unlucky cannabis consumers who tends to break things, no judgement but pick up a cheap pipe while you are out gathering supplies, just in case.

Cannabis Self-Care

If you are someone who uses cannabis to help ease anxiety, and who doesn’t, make sure you leave time in between work, family and other obligations for cannabis use during quarantine self-care.  What that is will differ drastically from person to person but for some people that means a good long bong session with your favorite music and for others it could mean an edible, a glass of wine and a long soak.  As long as it helps you to relax, your cannabis self-care can be pretty much anything.  Also don’t forget to tap into your creativity.  This can be a huge part of self-care for a lot of cannabis users.  If you get the feels from working on a new song or painting while stoned, make sure that is part of your routine.  When the weather allows try to take advantage and take your cannabis session outdoors.  That sunshine can be an instant mood booster, in addition to the cannabis.  This takes some willingness to be more flexible with your schedule.  If the sun is out and the temperature is decent, work can probably wait for two hours and that break in your routine will go a long way towards keeping you physically and mentally healthy during this quarantine.

Keep the Cannabis Flowing

If you were not able to fully stock up on cannabis, consider utilizing your local dispensary’s delivery service if they have one.  If they don’t, many cities have started services similar to DoorDash or UberEats but for weed, meaning they will pick up what you want from a local dispensary and delivery to your door for a minimal or sometimes no fee at all.  As many people make the decision to take social distancing much more seriously this winter, knowing what services will be available is just one less thing you need to stress over and having plenty of cannabis on hand is part of good planning. If you are planning to make a big purchase at a dispensary and they don’t advertise delivery, ask.  Often if it’s close to the end of the day and you don’t live too far away from the dispensary, they may just agree to swing by your place if you are a good customer.  Another option is to check with friends and neighbors and pool resources and requests together to save time and money.  For example, one person makes a trip to a dispensary and makes purchases for several neighbors.  Assuming you are not exceeding the cannabis limits, it’s a great way to limit trips out.  Plus we are all in this together so hopefully these tips help you be prepared for your cannabis use during quarantine.

Exploring the Benefits of Tinctures

Benefits of Tinctures

There are many delivery methods for both THC and CBD but tinctures is one method that is not talked about as often as the more commons methods such as smoking or vaping.  Many cannabis connoisseurs have rejected the possible benefits of tinctures outright as they view them as only for newbies or specifically for medical marijuana patients.  Nothing could be further from the truth and if the tincture is purchased from a reputable source, it can be something fun and new for even the most experienced cannabis user.  The key is to do your homework before making a purchase as there are a lot of options out there, some better than others.

Give Your Lungs a Break

Yes you can clear a bong better than anyone you know and your lungs are in tip top shape. Let’s keep them that way and give them a break every so often.  Using a tincture does exactly that, gives your respiratory system a break.  If you are not a fan of edibles, consider giving tinctures a try.  If this is your first time, definitely ask your budtender to recommend just the right one for your needs.  If you use cannabis for any medical condition, tinctures are an easy way to make sure you get your medicine and unlike with an edible, as this is a sublingual (under the tongue) delivery method, the cannabis bypasses your digestive system and the effects are felt much faster.  If you do like edibles and want to add a little something extra to your brownie, a few drops of a good tincture can really elevate your buzz.

Dosing Made Easy

More benefits of tinctures are the dosing is super easy.  Any bottle you buy will have specific dosage instructions on the label and most tinctures are dosed by the dropper full.  If you think that might be starting off with too much you can always scale back to literally one drop at a time.  Just wait 15 minutes and do a “how am I doing” assessment.  This method is excellent for newbies who are nervous about getting too high.  With tinctures, it is very unlikely unless you down the entire bottle, not recommended.  For the cannabis connoisseur, adding tinctures as part of your session can really change things up.  If you feel you need to be a little bit higher, add a few drops under your tongue and enjoy. Conversely, having a tincture around that is high in CBD can work wonders in those rare moments when you find that you’ve gotten too high, just a few drops to bring you down a little bit.  It’s all about creating the right balance for yourself.

A Few Downsides

As with so many nearly perfect things like cannabis, they are not in fact perfect and there can be a few downsides as opposed to benefits of tinctures.  With regards to tinctures, the biggest downside is probably taste.  If you view using a tincture in the same way you view taking any medication, then the taste most likely won’t bother you as much but for other cannabis users who want their cannabis to taste good, or at least not taste bad, finding the right tincture to satisfy your taste buds can be a challenge.  Again this is why a good trustworthy budtender is essential.  They will know which ones to avoid, tastewise.  Another downside of tinctures is there has been so many of them on the market in the last year or so and the claims companies have started making about what their particular tinctures can do are unreasonable and in some cases just outright lies.  Reading labels carefully is important as many companies advertise cannabis tinctures that people believe are high in THC when in fact they have little to no THC and are high in CBD.  This is fine if that is what you are looking to purchase but take the time to confirm either verbally, by text or email exactly what you are buying.  Ask direct questions and if you are not sure about a product, don’t spend your money on it.  There are plenty of good quality tinctures out there to choose from whether you want CBD, THC or both.

Cannabis Karma

cannabis karma

First of all I’m a big believer in karma generally.  I think if you put good things out into the world, that’s what you will get back and vice versa, eventually.  I never really thought about karma being more specific of a concept than that however when I had my first party some years ago, I learned a valuable lesson about cannabis karma and about friends.

I was so stoked to finally live in a place that was big enough and had the right kind of environment for a party.  I had never hosted one before and always wanted to try it.  At the time I was living on the second floor of a house near the campus where I was attending school.  I had the whole floor to myself and although the sloped roof was a little annoying, my downstairs neighbor was super cool and had no problem with parties as long as things didn’t get too crazy. I wanted to start small so I only invited 15 people and figured I would end up with 10.  That proved to be accurate and I think 10 or 11 people showed up.  I also decided since this was my first party and I wanted to be mature as a young adult, the party should have a theme.  Looking back I have no idea why I thought this was necessary but I digress.  The theme was blended drinks and cannabis, not together of course, separately!

I had all party supplies ready to go including half an ounce of some dank weed, a little bit of hash, various kinds of alcohol, juices and of course plenty of snacks.  As people started arriving I encouraged them to get creative with their blended drinks and although I was super stoned, I had a feeling mixing crème de menthe, vanilla ice cream and Grapenuts cereal was not going to go well, I will never forget the faces of my friends who were brave enough to try it. No matter how much cannabis you consume and how hard the munchies hit, I do not recommend this particular drink.

The party went very well, disgusting drink combinations aside and everyone had plenty of food, drinks and weed.  I shared the hash with a few friends and by 1 am the party was starting to wind down, everyone had left with the exception of two friends who offered to help me clean up a bit.  As we were doing just that I noticed my weed was gone or at least not on the table where it had been sitting for the entire party.  I asked my friends and neither one of them had seen it so as I grew more and more freaked out, we tore apart my place and looked literally everywhere.  By around 3 am we all came to the conclusion that someone had stolen it.  It was pretty heartbreaking to know someone I considered a friend would steal from me and anyone who has had something stolen knows the feeling well.  First you don’t believe it but once you accept it, it’s just sad.  I wasn’t even angry at how much cannabis had apparently walked out my door, just really sad.  Nothing to do but try not to dwell on it and go to sleep.

I woke up late the next day as I had not fallen asleep until after 4 am.  I was still in a state of shock that my first party had ended in such a shitty way and as word spread throughout the day I began to get calls and texts from everyone who had been at the party expressing disbelief and other similar sentiments.  I admit I was holding on to hope that someone would say they had accidently taken it, thinking it was their cannabis but no such luck.  Goodbye weed.  I tried to put it out of my mind and hope that karma would do the rest.

The next morning, as I was leaving my place to head to school, I saw one of those small brightly colored gift bags with a green ribbon tying it closed sitting on my front porch.  Since it was not my birthday or any type of holiday I was a slightly nervous to open it.  Curiosity soon won over my initial apprehension and I opened the bag.  Yes you probably guessed, my cannabis was inside along with another baggie of cannabis and a note that said “sorry”.  Years later I still have no idea which one of my party guests took the weed and then returned it plus more weed and so much time has passed, I will likely never know.  That’s just fine though as my belief in karma, even cannabis karma, was reinforced and remains strong to this day.

Is Cannabis the Fountain of Youth for Seniors?

Cannabis Health Benefits for Seniors

As the boomer generation reaches retirement and beyond, quality of life becomes the main focus for many seniors.  It is tough to enjoy those golden years when your health affects your quality of life in a major way.  While cannabis can’t stop the clock on aging, we’re still waiting on Elon Musk to tackle that, it can go a long way towards helping seniors manage some of the most common complaints about getting older in general.  Many seniors have to deal with a variety of health problems from sleep disturbances to aches and pains to cognitive function issues and cannabis health benefits for seniors help with all of these and more.

As we age the quality of our sleep declines.  For some staying asleep is the biggest problem and for others falling asleep is a common complaint.  The bottom line is that it is impossible to feel your best when you consistently have trouble sleeping.  One night here and there is not a big deal but not getting good quality sleep most nights will of course begin to take a toll during waking hours with mood changes, trouble focusing and daytime fatigue being the biggest complaints from seniors who struggle to get a good night’s sleep.  Cannabis can do wonders for sleep problems.  Choosing the right strain is important and although a heavy duty Indica with a high THC percentage may sound like the solution, for seniors less really is more.  Consuming an Indica dominant hybrid with a THC percentage between 15-20% seems to work best for seniors for both ease of falling asleep and sleeping more hours without waking.

Getting older is not for the faint of heart and even the healthiest seniors experience aches and pains from time to time and for some seniors with various types of medical conditions such as arthritis, dealing with aches and pains is an everyday occurrence.  Cannabis health benefits for seniors who want to use cannabis to alleviate this type of pain, there are a few options.  One is to try CBD, either in the form of a tincture or balm to spot treat problematic areas or soreness.  Another option is to go with a 1:1 THC:CBD strain which so far seems quite popular and effective for seniors.  Yet a third possibility is to go with a medium THC strain of cannabis of between 15-20% THC.  The only issue reported with the third option is that mornings tend to be the worst time of day for seniors with aches and pains, that morning stiffness takes an hour or two to dissipate and if the cannabis strain makes you sleepy, it’s tough to have a productive day after consuming cannabis in the morning for some seniors.

A common challenge for seniors is a decreased appetite.  This is due to several reasons including a slower metabolism and the fact that taste buds are not functioning as well as we age so eating in general loses some of its appeal.  Not eating enough can lead to low energy and a vulnerable immune system so keeping a healthy appetite is crucial for seniors.  The right cannabis strains can stimulate the appetite for seniors.  In general Indica dominant strains are more likely to increase the appetite than Sativa cannabis strains so consuming cannabis about an hour before dinner is an excellent way for seniors to ensure they are getting the proper amount of food. Making healthy food choices is also an important element for everyone, not just seniors and unfortunately there is no specific cannabis strain that can help with that.  Goals for 2021!

Yet another reality of aging is a decline in overall cognitive function.  This can present itself in a variety of ways including a decreased ability to learn new things and memory issues as well as dementia.  THC has been found to supply the body with cannabinoids that decrease over time as we age, keeping cognitive function at a higher level without any negative side effects that are so common in pharmaceuticals, especially for seniors who tend to take more medication than their younger counterparts.  Additionally cannabis health benefits for seniors have been shown to improve the links between nerve cells and the brain.  This benefit can help seniors learn more easily and also help with memory retention which is paramount to learning over the long-term.  Although cannabis cannot transform the brain of a 65 year old into the brain of a 25 year old, it can still go a long way towards maintaining healthy cognitive function well into the golden years.

Cannabis Use and Employment: What You Need to Know About Drug Testing

Drug Testing For Employment

Many things have changed in the last year.  An unprecedented number of people are working from home and unfortunately a large number of people are unemployed and searching for a job.  Even in states where cannabis is legal for both medical as well as recreational use, drug testing for employment as a prerequisite, is fairly common across most job industries.  Once you have the job random drug testing is not as common as it was five years ago but it is certainly not unheard of in many industries.  Understanding how your cannabis use, both the amount you use and your unique physicality can impact the outcome of a mandatory drug test is important for getting and then keeping a job.

Methods of Testing Matter

Luckily for most cannabis users, the gold standard for mandatory drug testing for employment is a urine test which is a test that detects THC in the form of metabolites that are in your body after the THC in cannabis has been processed several times by your liver. So essentially the test is not really testing for THC, it’s testing for the byproducts of THC left in your body after you have consumed cannabis.  The two metabolites that are specially being tested for are THC-COOH, the most common, and 11-OH-THC.  Testing for both metabolites in a standard urine test is expensive so most companies will choose to only test for THC-COOH to keep costs down.  Speaking of costly testing for cannabis, the reason why most if not all companies do not use a blood, saliva or hair test, which would yield much more accurate results in most cases, is because of the high cost of those tests.  It is possible some high level and high paying jobs may spend the money but it is extremely unlikely.

How Long Does it Take for THC to be Out of My System?

The short answer to this question is, it’s complicated.  One of the most important factors is the amount and frequency with which you consume cannabis.  For occasional users the timeframe is between 1-3 days.  The real challenge is to determine what an occasional user means.  Broadly speaking it means consuming cannabis less than twice a month, so once every other week.  If you are a moderate cannabis user, it will take between 5-7 days for the THC to be out of your system.  A moderate user is someone who uses cannabis at least once a week with the average being twice a week.  So probably a weekend stoner.  If you are a daily user it will take between 10-15 days for the THC to be out of your system and for a heavy user it will take 30 days or more.  A heavy cannabis user is someone who consumes cannabis multiple times per day on a regular basis.  The cutoff point used by the lab and requested by your employer also matters.  For standard testing, the test will be considered positive if THC-COOH is detected at 50 ng/ml.  What that means is for most users except heavy users, they can easily pass this type of drug testing for employment after about 10 days of not consuming cannabis.  Some employers, for example law enforcement, test at a much lower threshold of 20 ng/ml.  So knowing if your employer has an absolute zero tolerance policy is useful information because they may test at this more rigorous level.

Your Unique Physicality Matters

There are factors besides what type of test you take and how much and long you have been consuming cannabis that affect the results.  Your metabolism is one such unique element.  Some people just naturally have faster metabolisms than others and for those folks, any THC and metabolites will be eliminated faster than for others.  The myth of ramping up your exercise frequency and intensity in the days before a test to ensure clean results, is just that, a myth.  In fact it may actually do more harm than good in terms of your test results.  Your hydration level matters as well.  Staying properly hydrated should be a normal part of your routine regardless if you have a test coming up or not but being dehydrated definitely increases the chances that THC and metabolites can be detected through a standard urine test.  Stay away from alcohol in the days before your test as that can contribute to dehydration.  One of the most important elements is body fat.  THC metabolites are stored in body fat meaning the more body fat you have the higher the likelihood of metabolites being detected for a longer period of time.  Cannabis users who are thin with a low BMI will have a shorter testing window to be concerned with.  In most cases woman naturally have a higher body fat percentage than men so for all you female stoners out there who are concerned they may have to pass a urine test any time soon, work on getting to a healthy BMI.  This is true for men as well but men tend to naturally have a lower body fat percentage to be worried about.

Creating a Healthy Cannabis Lifestyle

Healthy Cannabis Lifestyle

As we head into winter and, for many people, the holiday season it is a good time to take a look at your cannabis lifestyle and see if there are any changes that need to be made.  Despite the fact that the holiday season is supposed to be all about fun, family and friends, the reality is it can be an extremely stressful time for a lot of folks.  This year’s holiday season promises to be more stressful than typical years with many families still under a pretty strict quarantine plus the uncertainty of the times adds yet another layer of stress.  Cannabis can go a long to helping manage that stress however creating a smart and healthy cannabis lifestyle plan can be the difference between using cannabis to help navigate the season and allowing it to become another cause for undue pressure.

Setting a Realistic Cannabis Budget

Especially for those who are living in states or countries that have recently legalized marijuana for recreational or medical use, it is so easy to want to try nearly every strain in the dispensary.  Much like a kid in a candy store whose eyes are bigger than their stomach, your eyes may be bigger than your wallet.  Unless you are independently wealthy, creating a cannabis budget for yourself or you and your partner makes smart financial sense and will take away a lot of stress that comes from overspending.  If you are having difficulty sticking to the budget you created for cannabis, try talking with your favorite dispensary about ways to save some money.  It might be changing the day you visit the dispensary to take advantage of deals or utilizing discounts for seniors, students or artists, you would be surprised at the types of discount available.  Also as it is harvest season and dispensaries will soon be stocking new strains, ask about deep discounts for existing strains.  Those budtenders can’t take it all home after all!

Take a Look at Your Cannabis Consumption Habits

Are you normally a nighttime cannabis consumer, a wake n’ baker, an all-day stoner or a weekend only user.  For many folks their anxiety amps up during the holiday season and the normal outlets for that anxiety become more limited.  Long leisurely walks are not as relaxing when it’s pouring down rain and freezing or snowing outside so the temptation to increase your cannabis use as a way of coping with stress and anxiety is normal but you want to make sure you are still using cannabis in a healthy way and not as a means to permanently hide out this winter, although it’s tempting.  Talking to your partner or friends helps as well because they know you and won’t be afraid to be honest.  If your partner says your cannabis use is getting to be too much and is interfering with quality time between the two of you, readjusting your cannabis consumption may be the best thing for your relationship, plus you’ll save a little money too.  It is common when visiting a dispensary to want to try out the super high THC strains of cannabis but just because a strain is north of 30% doesn’t mean as much as you might think.  Terpenes and whether it’s a Sativa, Indica or Hybrid are also factors and so is your own body’s chemistry.  Try those strains out in small amounts rather than spending a ton of money on something that may prove disappointing.  A good budtender will give you their honest opinion if you ask for it.

Manage Procrastination Levels

The key here is being honest with yourself.  If you plan to work out three mornings a week and your wake n’ bake session are keeping you in bed instead of on the treadmill, it is time to be more flexible with your cannabis schedule.  If you find that your creativity and focus is lagging because you are out of your favorite strain, it might be time to switch up your routine and try creative pursuits with a different strain or one or two days a week, try to see how creative you are without cannabis.  Flexibility is so important to managing stress levels and keeping a healthy cannabis lifestyle.  Routines are obviously important and crucial to maintaining some semblance of sanity through the long winter months but if your routine is causing you or others problems, rethinking how you do things will save you undue stress.  When we have a routine that is healthy and sometimes productive, procrastination is not a real obstacle to a calm and happy lifestyle. You know you will get things done because you have created a healthy cannabis lifestyle that works for you and including cannabis will only enhance your life!

Signs You’ve Become a Cannabis Connoisseur

Cannabis Connoisseur

As more people consume cannabis than ever before, trying new strains and new delivery methods, gone are the days of the uneducated stoner.  Making cannabis a vital part of your life means doing your homework, not just about new strains, although that is vital information but about the cannabis industry in general and how you fit into it.  Are you sharing your knowledge with other stoners?  If so that makes you a cannabis connoisseur.  Are you experimenting with different delivery methods and strains?  Great.  Are you a proud member of the cannabis community?  Finding your place in a growing global community can be a challenge but it’s an important step to being a cannabis connoisseur.

People Look to You for Advice

Whether its friends, family or a random stranger at your local dispensary, people have a way of gravitating towards those with knowledge.  That doesn’t mean you have to spend all your free time offering unsolicited advice about how much you know about weed, that in fact is the opposite of a cannabis connoisseur, that is just someone with a big ego who needs attention and applause, steer clear of those types of cannabis users. Being a good listener is one of the best ways to establish your reputation as someone who can be trusted to give advice about all things cannabis.  If you hear a friend talking about how sleepy weed makes them, listen to their whole story, ask the right questions such as what time of the day are you using cannabis and what is the cannabis strain and effect?  Using the right language can go a long way from differentiating yourself as a cannabis connoisseur rather than a general know it all.  Beginning every sentence with “you should” is not the way to go.  Soften your language and people will seek out your advice.  Using “when I was in a similar situation” is much more authoritative but in a quiet confident way not a bossy way.

You Expand Your Knowledge Beyond Cannabis Consumption

This does not mean you should learn everything there is to know about cannabis but think about your own interests and how you can expand your cannabis knowledge based on those interests.  If you are a political junkie, take the time to learn about how the legalization process is going in your country and even other countries around the world.  It is interesting to find out how a country is planning or not planning to legalize cannabis and the reasons why.  Are you a pretty decent cook or baker?  If so take those skills and apply them to learning about the world of cannabis edibles.  Not to say you should quit your job and become a cannabis baker but if you already enjoy and know a fair amount about baking, why not expand that knowledge base.  Do you have a green thumb?  If so there is a lot of interesting information out there about growing your own cannabis.  Whether you plan to start growing or not is secondary to learning about something you already enjoy, in this case two things, cannabis and growing things.  It’s a rare person that has ever expressed regret about learning new things and you never know when that knowledge will come in handy as you become even more of a cannabis connoisseur.

Your Cannabis Consumption Skills are On Point

To truly be a cannabis connoisseur, you may need to up your consumption game a little bit. Not the amount you consume necessarily but the methods. Think of it as the best kind of practice in the world.  Can you roll a perfect joint or at least a pretty impressive one that has no stems poking through and does not fall apart with the slightest of breezes?  No?  Consider it research and keep practicing until you get it right, or at least improve your joint rolling skills.  Do you dab?  Finding the best, for your budget, dab ring and learning how to use it properly takes a little practice but this is the best type of practice ever!  Some dab rings are fairly simple and easy to use but others resemble a mad scientist’s laboratory and knowing about the different styles and the benefits is important as a cannabis connoisseur. Layering is very popular right now and you can do that in many different ways, with pipes, bongs, even joints or blunts.  Essentially you are combining different types of cannabis in one bowl, or joint.  It can be either an effective way to get incredibly baked or it can be an art form or possibly both.  Starting off with some flower in a bowl and drizzling some wax on top, then a finish of kief is a beautiful thing and this type of skill improvement is all part of your journey to becoming a cannabis connoisseur.

How Cannabis Affects Dreams

How Cannabis Affects Dreams

For people that consume cannabis on an occasional basis, their dreams will likely not be affected unless you stop and start with a specific rhythm but for those regular cannabis users, their dreams will be significantly affected.  To understand how cannabis affects dreams and why, it is first necessary to talk a bit about sleep in general.  As most people are aware, there are four distinct sleep cycles of varying lengths.  The first three cycles grow increasing longer and produce deeper sleep.  It is common for people who are light sleepers to wake up during one of the first 3 sleep cycles, maybe to use the bathroom or as a response to noise or some other distraction.  The fourth sleep cycle is the longest and deepest and that is the one during which we dream.  Called the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle, this part of sleep lasts the longest, anywhere from 10-90 minutes and this is the sleep stage when we dream.  The THC in cannabis suppresses our dreams during this stage.  Why would this be a desired outcome?

Most of the time we associate dreaming with positive images but in reality it’s not all rainbows and unicorns when it comes to dreaming.  The vast major of our dreams are simply neutral or slightly strange in nature.  So why would we want to suppress something that is not harmful like dreams?  The answer is, we may not but if you are someone who suffers from frequent nightmares or even just disturbing dreams on occasion, it can be a breath of fresh air to drift off to sleep each night knowing that you will not wake up in fear or confusion.  As cannabis use controls the very ability to dream during REM sleep, for many people that can be a welcome relief, at least on a temporary basis.

If you are an occasional cannabis user, your dreams will definitely be affected based on when you actually consume cannabis and when you stop.  For example, if you consume cannabis only on the weekends, once Tuesday or Wednesday rolls around and the THC is out of your system, you will start dreaming again and those dreams will likely be fairly vivid.  Some people have reported very colorful dreams or especially strange dreams and a few unlucky folks have nightmares.  This is temporary as your body readjusts and usually only lasts a few nights however if you repeat the cycle of consuming cannabis on the weekends, you may spend your midweek nights having some pretty strange dreams.  Other factors come into play as well including how much cannabis you consume, just an edible or two will not affect your dreams much at all or a few bong hits is unlikely to stop your dreams completely.  The amount of THC in the cannabis also matters as does the particular terpenes and other cannabinoids.  The exact ways cannabis affects dreams is still be studied.

What benefits could there be from suppressing your dreams on a long-term basis?  One area in which cannabis is proving extremely effective is in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Upwards of 70% of people with PTSD experience regular nightmares that interfere with the quality of their lives in a profound way.  Treatment with cannabis has been quite successful in addressing PTSD nightmares.  Up until recently PTSD sufferers were treated with antidepressants or hypnotics or often both and did not get much relief especially considering the potential for serious side effects.  Cannabis has proven itself to be an effective treatment for this particular symptom of PTSD and allowed people with PTSD to get much better quality sleep and feel better during waking hours as a direct result.  So although the idea of suppressing dreams may not sound appealing to everyone, for some it can truly change the quality of their lives in positive ways with little to no negative side effects.

Why Budder is the Better Concentrate

How to Make Budder

So before we explore why budder is the best cannabis concentrate, for those unfamiliar, what is budder and how to make budder?  Budder is one of many cannabis concentrates of various consistencies and made via slightly different processes.  As you might guess budder has the consistency of slightly melted but thicker than normal butter.  Heavier than honeycomb concentrates but lighter than crumble and shatter, budder is definitely a favorite amongst cannabis users who like to dab, vape and can even be added to joints or a bowl.  It is a completely potent versatile concentrate.  At the present time budder is popular mostly with recreational users but that may soon change as more and more medical marijuana patients are seeing the benefits of budder especially if they require high potency cannabis to treat their medical condition.

How to Make Budder

Like most other cannabis concentrates, the first stage of how to make budder involves butane and CO2 to blast the cannabis flower so that cannabinoids like THC and CDB can be extracted.  Next comes the process of using heat and air pressure to remove all potential harmful solvents so that at the end of this part of the process you are left with just the concentrated parts of the cannabis plant.  So how to achieve that nice fluffy texture?  Time and patience and a little baking experience can’t hurt.  While the cannabinoids are being purged at a high temperature, you must carefully and at the right time, whip the budder like you do a cake batter.  It takes some preparation to keep things at the right temperature and at the same time make sure you are whipping enough but not too much.  This process takes some practice to get the consistency just right but is definitely worth the effort if you are a DIY type of cannabis user.

Budder Benefits

There are quite a number of benefits that make budder the preferred cannabis concentrate and potentially the preferred cannabis in general.  The first is potency.  Budder is the most potent of all forms of cannabis and if made correctly with good quality flower, you can expect a potency level of between 80-90%.  That’s some powerful weed!  Another obvious benefit is how clean it is when prepared correctly.  Today’s marijuana is certainly cleaner in general than a decade ago but removing all harmful chemicals and potential toxins is pretty rare, even these days.  Budder, again made correctly, has a purity level of over 99%, with an average of 99.6%.  With that level of purity you can feel good, not to mention really stoned, that what you are consuming is just cannabis, nothing else.  As most cannabis connoisseurs know, terpenes are important, very important and budder retains more terpenes than any other cannabis concentrate which equals a better taste and overall high.

Enjoying Budder

Now that you know how to make budder, you can enjoy budder in basically any other way you enjoy cannabis, with the exception of edibles.  Rolling that gummy in budder is not going to do you much good unless you light the gummy on fire, which would taste, well maybe someone will give it a try and report back.  Putting budder in a blunt or joint is called twaxing and is one possible way you can add some budder to your flower to really enhance you high.  You can also do something similar with a pipe, bong or bubbler, just add the budder in with your raw bud.  Keep in mind though that the budder has a higher melting point than just flower so you need to heat it longer before taking a hit.  Dabbing and vaping are arguably the best ways to enjoy the clean potency and taste of budder.  Heating the budder up to the right melting point is just easier to control with a dab ring or vaporizer.  That being said, everyone has their favorites and trying out different ways to experience the quality of good budder is all part of the fun of being a stoner.

Combine Cannabis and Sex for a Mind-Blowing Time

cannabis and sex

Two of the best things around, cannabis and sex, so naturally consuming cannabis should make for some mind-blowing sex.  Not so fast, before you light up and hook up, take a look at some of the obvious benefits of sex while stoned but also a few things to keep in mind or at least plan ahead for.  Whether you are with a long term partner or it’s a new relationship, or even an agreed one night thing, cannabis can do wonders to enhance what is already a pretty good time.

Choosing the Right Strain

The right cannabis strain can really elevate your next sexual experience.  Knowing which ones are right for you can take some testing, it’s all in the name of sexual science.  However there are some strains that have a reputation amongst cannabis connoisseurs who like to enhance their sex life with cannabis.  Mimosa is a perfect one for many people as it leaves you feeling energetic, euphoric, happy and you can then let go of your inhibitions a little and enjoy the tingly sensations this strain can bring on.   The Sativa dominant hybrid Trainwreck is another favorite to get you in the right headspace, and it really does intensify sensations.  Perfect for sexual exploration.  Granddaddy Purple is an Indica dominant hybrid but it does not leave you couch locked, or bed locked for that matter.  It allows you to get out of your head enough so that you can focus on your partner, yourself and just being in the moment.  Another consideration, in addition to the right cannabis strain, is knowing which Terpenes really bring out your sexual best.  Generally myrcene is known for its relaxing properties and pinene is uplifting so a strain that combines the two is a perfect sexual duo!

The Benefits of Cannabis and Sex

Sex while high can really be an amazing experience.  After a nice fat blunt or a few bong hits your muscles will be super relaxed and every touch, your own and your partners feels a little magical. Start things off with a sensual massage that after you’ve consumed cannabis feels even better because your body is more receptive and sensitive to touch. Cannabis always help you to overcome shyness with a new partner or maybe you are looking to experiment more with a current partner.  The right cannabis strain can make bringing up the topic much easier and less stressful.  Ever had the giggles during sex?  What about when you’re high?  Enjoying a good laugh with your partner, not at your partner of course, can truly be a sexually bonding experience.  If you have never tried cannabis and sex, you’re missing out.  It will bring you closer together and make the sex that much more exciting.  Another benefit of stoned sex, your perception of time increases significantly so even if you and your partner are not going for hours, it will feel like it!

Possible Negatives and Solutions

Many people become a little forgetful after consuming cannabis.  Now you won’t be so forgetful that you forget your partner is there, it’s more about the details.  Did you remember to get condoms?  Where are those mood enhancing candles, still in the car?  It’s only a problem if you let it become one and the easy solution, prepare everything before you consume any cannabis, that way you don’t ruin the mood and your buzz running around your place or neighborhood at the last minute.  You won’t enjoy it and neither will your partner, although it might be entertaining for your neighbors!  Another unwanted side effect of cannabis and sex is cotton mouth and for some women cotton vagina, yes it’s a thing.  That is why lube was invented so put that on your preparation list because making a last minute lube run is not sexy.  For the cotton mouth, no not lube, just stay hydrated and using ice cubes and alternating with warm liquids is an amazing way to keep dry mouth under control.  It happens to all men, no really if it happens to you or your partner during sex, it could be the amount of cannabis or even the strain so before you call the doctor and request Viagra, try waiting 20 minutes or so and then give it another go.  In the meantime, focus on massage and foreplay.  For next time, try consuming less cannabis or choose a more Sativa dominant hybrid or a Sativa strain, no Indicas.  Sleepy sex might be something that happens but is usually not a goal.

Attack of the Double Decker PP&J Sandwich

Indica and Munchies

I love a good Indica at night.  There is nothing more relaxing than, especially when the weather is chilly than to smoke a few good bowls at night, curl up with in bed under piles of blankets and feel those body waves hit.  The perfect fall or winter cannabis experience in my opinion.  As with most people who consume Indica strains on a regular basis, the battle of the munchies is a real one.  Indica and munchies just go hand in hand. You can try and fight it, but I rarely win that battle so my new goal was to slowly wean myself away from late night pizza and move towards something slightly healthier.  Baby steps though, I was not about to become a late night kale eater.

I had several excellent Indica strains around and decided that night would be a mix up between two of my favorites.  A little northern lights plus a little 9 LB Hammer and I was getting pretty stoned.  Maybe just one more bowl of my new nighttime mix and then it was time to crawl under the covers and see what I could find to watch on TV that was at all entertaining.  I struggle, when really stoned, of getting into a pattern of mindless channel changing so I was happy I found something that could hold my interest, a new episode of Homeland had just come out.  Yea!  Now I just needed something to drink and a “healthy” snack and my perfect night would be complete.

A trip to the kitchen and as I scanned the refrigerator for healthy options, nothing looked good.  Clearly the last time I had been grocery shopping I had not consumed cannabis beforehand or there would be better snacks.  I did have whole-wheat bread and peanut butter was kind of healthy right?  Sure it is.  Plus some yummy Cascadia Farms strawberry jam, okay its pure sugar but baby steps, remember.  Why settle for a single sandwich when you can go big and make a double decker one.  Indica and munchies were working their magic. After using nearly half a jar of peanut butter and not nearly as much jam, gotta watch that sugar intake, I had myself a beautiful tall pile of deliciousness to enjoy with a giant glass of milk.  I settled back into bed and started watching TV.

I remember a dream, I think.  I was trying to make my way through a weird yellow jungle but no matter what I did I could not get through.  Strange animals were sending me warning calls, I tried to answer but could not.  I was sweating it was so hot in that yellow jungle. I woke up and it was still dark in my bedroom so I rolled over to try and get comfortable so I could drift off again.  I remember smelling peanut butter but was too tired to think beyond that fleeting moment.

It was morning, my alarm was buzzing and I opened my eyes to a completely new feeling.  Apparently my cannabis Indica session has resulted in an attack during the night.  That double decker PB & J sandwich had beat the shit out of me!  Peanut butter was everywhere, literally everywhere.  In my eyes, hair, apparently I had rolled onto my sandwich and we must have done battle all night.  That sandwich beat me hands down.  The bread, not a concern when you have peanut butter in your ear.  I spent the next hour showering and cleaning up.  Those sheets had a new design, even after I washed them twice.  I like to call it “fall leaves” because there are spots of red from the jam and kind of brownish yellow from the peanut butter.  It’s a look, don’t judge. Indica and munchies had won again.

So the next time I decide to have a full on Indica mix session, I plan to choose my munchies so that it complements the new pattern of my sheets.  Or perhaps I should sick with one bowl, maybe a Sativa for good measure.  Cannabis and the munchies go hand in hand, especially with Indica strains but I would like to think I learned something that night.  If ever I find myself in a thick yellow jungle, don’t listen to those strange unhelpful animals, run towards water or at least a nice milk pond.

Welcome Back: Getting Back into Cannabis after a Break

Getting Back Into Cannabis

For some folks who have taken a tolerance break of a month or two, not much has changed.  For the former cannabis connoisseurs who are living in a state or country where cannabis has recently or soon will be legal, it may have been awhile and things have definitely changed in the world of weed.  Before you visit your local dispensary to stock up there are a few things to think about so you can make the transition back into the cannabis lifestyle smoothly, whether you plan to be an everyday user or an occasional one or even a “keeping all options open” type of cannabis user. Here are some useful tips for getting back into cannabis.

Check out your local laws

Take the time to review the cannabis limit laws in your state.  Each state has slightly different laws regarding how much and the type of cannabis products you can purchase each day or sometimes with a two week time period.  While it’s unlikely you are going to exceed those limits on your first trip out to a dispensary as the budtenders will make sure you don’t, if you are like so many people and want to check out a few dispensaries, each time you show your ID, your purchases will be tracked by the state agency responsible for cannabis legalization and regulation.  Sounds creepy but unless you are planning on really buying in bulk, it should not be an issue.  Also keep in mind that the cannabis limits will be different depending on if you are a medical marijuana patient or a recreational user, with medical patients having higher limits. This will be helpful either way for getting back into cannabis.

Choosing the Right Cannabis for Your Triumphant Return

Naturally a good budtender can make recommendations but having some idea of what you are looking for before you head to a marijuana dispensary can really help.  Think about how you plan to consume your cannabis.  Certainly don’t feel limited to one way, maybe edibles and flower to start or a few joints and a cart to try vaping.  Nothing is more frustrating for a budtender than a customer who says they want to get some “good weed”.  That used to be the only goal back in the day but a lot more options exist and they are all pretty good!  If you are a medical marijuana patient, make sure to let the budtender know right away and talk about which symptoms you want to treat with cannabis and if you have any prior cannabis experiences, good or bad, let them know that as well so they can point you towards the right strains.  For recreational users, tell the budtender you have not used cannabis in a while and also let them know about any negatives you are looking to avoid.  The more information you can give to the budtender, the better able they are to make sure your first, in a while, cannabis experience is a great one.  Picking up more than one strain is usually a good way to get back into cannabis these days.

Jumping Back In

The first thing to remember when getting back into cannabis is your tolerance level will likely be quite low, unless you are some type of cannabis superhero.  Keep that in mind as you smoke your first joint or eat those first gummies.  The key is to really pay attention the first few days in terms of how you feel each time you consume cannabis.  Is being buzzed everything you remember and more?  Are there are side effects that you don’t like such as some Sativa strains can cause a bit of the jitters especially the first 15-20 minutes.  The goal with a recreational cannabis user is usually to get high with no unwanted side effects.  If that is not happening, lucky for you there are many other strains out there to try.  For the medical cannabis patient, how are your symptoms after consuming cannabis the first day?  What about the second and third?  If you are not getting the relief you want it might be the strain or it might be the CBD:THC ratio.  You should talk to your doctor as well as a budtender so that a better strain can be found to meet your needs.  For both medical and recreational marijuana users who have not tried cannabis in a long period of time, there is some trial and error necessary for most people in the beginning so it’s usually a good idea to not overbuy one strain right away.  There is plenty of time to find the perfect cannabis for you!

Climate Change and the Cannabis Industry

How Climate Change Affects Cannabis Growers

As the effects of climate change continue to wreak havoc across the planet, the relatively new cannabis industry has begun to be affected by the drastically changing climate.  Although cannabis can be successfully grown indoors as well as outdoors, the majority of cannabis growers in the US, over 60%, are growing their cannabis outdoors and this means maintaining consistency from year to year can be extremely challenging. How climate change affects cannabis growers is becoming more of an issue in the industry.

Last year many parts of the country suffered from too much rain which caused a number of problems for cannabis farms such as bacteria growth, not to mention insect invasions that were not planned for by growers and left them to deal with these unexpected issues and try as best they could to salvage their crops.  This year has brought record breaking wildfires, right before the typical harvest time of the end of September to the beginning of October, in some areas of the US, including California, Oregon and to a lesser degree Washington.  As all three states have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use, a significant portion of growers crops were adversely affected by the fires, in a direct way and by smoke and ash in a more indirect but equally concerning way.  The trend towards drastic climate extremes can certainly not be predicted however as more and more states and countries move towards legalization of cannabis for either recreational or medical use, or both, growers need to begin putting together some feasible strategies for dealing with the unpredictable climate from year to year.  The additional side issue of finding environmentally friendly ways to dispose of cannabis waste will be a growing problem as more and more cannabis growers expand their crops.

So far most cannabis growers have managed to salvage enough of their crops each year to keep dispensaries and consumers happy however as extreme weather events will continue to increase in the future, the harvestable cannabis may fluctuate wildly from year to year, affecting prices and causing serious problems for medical marijuana patients who rely on their medicine to manage serious health conditions.  In some places like Oregon where the growers, both indoor and outdoor, have done well for the last few years, there is currently an excess of cannabis. In theory this sounds great but with murky cannabis laws and federal laws prohibiting the state to state transportation of cannabis, this excess marijuana in Oregon will likely go to waste, which is truly unacceptable for states that do not have enough like Arkansas.  Prices can only go so low in Oregon and at a certain point growers will not be motivated to stay in the industry when they are not going to see any profits or they may choose to relocate to other states.  Surprisingly Kentucky and Tennessee have quite a large number of outdoor cannabis farms, despite both states conservative views on the legalization of cannabis. How climate change affects cannabis growers also depends on the geographical location of growers at this time.

The ability to be flexible may be part of the answer for how climate change affects cannabis growers moving forward as the climate grows more unpredictable and extreme each year.  Leaving growers to fend for themselves and their crops is not the answer and moving all cannabis farms to indoor grows is not financially possible, unless consumers want to start paying at least double the current prices.  Working with cannabis industry investors on technology that can at least mitigate the effects of extreme weather is a first step.  Putting pressure on state and federal politicians to relax industry standards so that cannabis farms located in areas less affected by extreme weather can be utilized by dispensaries from other states is another possible direction that should be explored.  The earth’s climate change problems will not be solved by one country or one industry, they were not created by one country or one industry, although some are worse offenders than others.  US fossil fuel industry, looking at you!  Sharing technology across borders is essential to making sure not just the cannabis industry can thrive but other industries as well.

The Best Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries in Eugene

Recreational Dispensaries in Eugene

Moss Crossing

Located on Friendly Street right at 27th in Eugene this amazing dispensary is doing things right and one of my favorite recreational marijuana dispensaries in Eugene.  They are currently open from 10 am to 8 pm every day but Sunday, with slightly reduced hours of 11 am to 7 pm.  From the outside of the dispensary you would never guess how beautiful, light and airy the inside is and it’s such an inviting vibe that no matter your age or cannabis expertise level, you will feel comfortable in this environment.  They are open for both pickup and delivery, which is a bonus and on a limited basis their budroom is open with clear and safe procedures in place.  Make sure you come with exact change though, it is required.  Moss Crossing has an extremely user friendly website, which should answer any questions you might have about their cannabis products or really anything cannabis related and if you can’t find the answer to what you need, give them a call.  They offer up to 20% off selected items and that is a seriously good discount for their quality products.  They also have some unique glassware to check out in addition to an extensive menu.  For vegans, they have a line of edibles that are delicious.  Their CBD products are also fairly extensive.  The Burner Phone hybrid flower was recommended by a very nice budtender and was amazing!  A true hybrid that is perfectly potent.  The Allen Wrench Live Budder was also off the charts in terms of price (reasonable) and potency (you will be super stoned).  You really can’t ask for more than that from any marijuana dispensary.

Terpene Station

With locations in both Portland Oregon and Eugene, this two dispensary chain is more than just a cool sounding place to buy marijuana and one of the best recreational marijuana dispensaries in Eugene.  Located on River Road it is both a recreational and medical dispensary.  Currently they are open from 9 am to 9:45 pm every day for pickup only right now which is a shame as this is a beautiful dispensary on the inside but best to be safe than try to open for in store shopping if they are not ready.  The inside is huge and in a strange way resembles a marijuana museum, lots of wood and glass.  This is the place to get your cannabis on your birthday as they offer a 30% discount off your total order which is incredible!  They also offer a 10% discount daily for both seniors and veterans plus plenty of daily and weekly specials.  The budtenders are experts in the area of all things cannabis and happy to explain things to novice users which is so nice because many people feel a bit intimidated when they first purchase marijuana from a dispensary.  They have their menu on both Leafly and Dutchie but preorders for pickup must be placed through Dutchie.  The CannaCrispy Fruity edibles are priced right and a welcome change from the traditional Rice Krispy type fare, which they also have.  They have classic flower strains like Royal Highness very reasonably priced and the quality is superb plus more unique strains like Dread Bread, a sweet organic hybrid bud that should be in all dispensaries.  Overall this dispensary has an extensive variety for any cannabis need.

The Greener Side

This dispensary is located pretty centrally on Oak Street at 15th in  in The Exchange Building, just two blocks from Safeway and is another one of the great recreational marijuana dispensaries in Eugene.  They are open from 10 am to 9 pm every day and are currently doing both curbside pickup and delivery, just give them a call about delivery.  They plan to open a River Road location soon and are the oldest OLCC licensed dispensary in Eugene so they know their cannabis.  The Greener Side is a leader in the community in terms of donation drives for a wide variety of charities and they are also one of the founding members of the Oregon Cannabis Industry Association which works towards creating best practice standards within the Oregon cannabis community.  All that and they have some seriously good weed too!  Their website is good but could use a little updating however all menu information is kept updated.  They also have a 10% off veterans discount and a 5% senior/student/industry discount plus daily deals 7 days a week.  All this plus the best prices around, although keep in mind the menu lists pre-tax prices.  The Sticky Bitch, which had to be tried because of the name, is indeed a sticky dank flower which smells and tastes great plus it is one of the best cannabis strains around.  The Slurricane Indica flower lives up to its name and leaves you with an intense dreamy body buzz like a good Indica should.  The Mimosa Live resin is yummy and super potent!  They have some cool merch for sale as well if that’s your thing.    Speaking with a budtender on the phone was easy and it’s clear they know their cannabis!

Spacebuds The Dispensary

Located right near WOW Hall in downtown Eugene in a mocha colored house this dispensary is the stuff of dreams and one of the most interesting recreational marijuana dispensaries in Eugene.  Spacebuds The Dispensary is open from 9 am to 10 pm except Sunday they close at 9 pm.  A concept dispensary for those who love horror, technology, classic space themed movies and games, in the words of Kelly the cool budtender, a techies dream.  Their website alone will transport you back in time, it is full of fun information presented in a totally unique way, well maybe George Lucas would disagree but for the world of cannabis, it’s an epic website. They have started streaming on Twitch from their site plus in the area of “Hidden Knowledge” is an impressive collection of quite a few studies related to cannabis and its use for a variety of medical conditions plus other more general cannabis information.  You can easily spend hours on their site! Currently you can pick up your cannabis or have someone speed your weed to you, really though they do deliver between noon and 8 pm except no Sunday delivery but if you have the opportunity, pay them a visit in person.  Currently they are allowing 4 people in the budroom and while you are waiting there is more than enough cool stuff to check out and with it being the month of Halloween, they have gone all out.  They offer daily specials plus so many specific discounts, no stacking though.  Seniors, veterans, students, teachers, industry peeps get 10% off plus they offer other specials you must check out like from 11-noon and 4:20 to 5:20 a Time Travelers Special of 50% off house rolls.  Amazing. Now to the marijuana itself. The Candyland hybrid flower is highly recommended, pun intended and the Black Kush might become a new nighttime favorite.  This unique and mind-blowing dispensary is someplace you must experience if you live in Eugene or are passing through.

Weekend Plans? Try Stoner Time Travel

fun things to do while high

The weekend is the perfect time to try something completely different.  It’s common to hear people wax nostalgic about when they were kids, how great life was and no matter when you were a kid you no doubt have some fond memories of that time.  Now combine your love of cannabis and with a little preparation you can achieve a trip back to your childhood but this time as an adult, a stoned adult.  Before heading to the grocery store and dispensary to get the necessary supplies, first spend some time brainstorming what your favorite foods were as a child as well as your favorite weekend activities. Then it’s time to create some new favorite fun things to do while high!

Stock up

Now is the time to indulge yourself, we’ve all earned it in 2020!  When you visit your favorite cannabis dispensary go old school and get some cannabis flower, Sativa and Indica if you like both and don’t forget those rolling papers.  Why papers?  Just in case you want to have a joint rolling competition with your partner of course.  When you swing by the grocery store, see what tasty treats you can find from your childhood for when the munchies hit.  Lemonheads and SweeTarts?  Also check the toy aisle too, even if you don’t have kids.  Pick up a game or two, they are now surprisingly cheap since board and card games have been replaced by online games for the most part.  Anything that takes you back in time to your childhood is fair game.

Wake n’ Bake and Cartoons

Keep it simple on your first morning back in time, the travel was probably pretty bumpy after all.  Start the day with some fine Sativa cannabis flower.  Go with an old school bong if you have one, or any easy to use pipe or bubbler.  The key is, keep things simple and basic.  Now it’s time for morning cartoons, or afternoon depending on how late you slept in.  It’s easy and usually free to find old school cartoons online like Bugs Bunny or Road Runner but if those were not what you watched as a kid, do a little searching and you can find them easily.  Now kick back and enjoy a piece of your childhood and your morning buzz and get ready for more fun things to do while high.  Breakfast, lunch or brunch time?  That’s right, open up that box of Cookie Crisp cereal, made even better with chocolate milk or if you are feel like cooking, chocolate chip pancakes are always a win and since you have traveled back in time to when you were a kid, no one will tell you not to put chocolate syrup on those pancakes.

Afternoon Stoner Ramble

Ready for some more fun things to do while high? Maybe after a post breakfast bong session it’s time consider getting outside for an hour or two, you know that’s what you did as a kid on weekends.  Bring along some more cannabis, maybe a joint or if you still have that one hitter even better.  So as a kid what did you do on a weekend day?  Skateboarded perhaps, jumped in the giant piles of leaves your neighbors so carefully raked up and then ran away.  The potential activities are endless, the trick is to get stoned and then think like a kid as you wander your neighborhood.  If you are with a friend or partner that grew up in a different time, even better, twice the ideas. Just like when you were a kid, a few hours of fresh air should tire you out and you can start heading home to grab a quick nap before the evening festivities and more fun things to do while high.

Games, Joints and Candy Oh My

Start the evening off by grinding up some choice cannabis for the joint rolling session.  If you’re like most people who have not rolled in a while, it make take a few tries to achieve a smokeable joint.  No matter, it’s a learning experience and hey now you have another skill to add to that resume, joking unless of course you plan to look for work as a budtender.  After getting baked, break out those board games or card games if you prefer.  You should have more than one option because what was fun as a kid might not be nearly as entertaining as an adult, plus being stoned adds another factor.  After you’ve had enough Uno grab that candy and settle in for some off limits TV watching and more marijuana.  Anything that was off limits to you as a child, either because your parents thought it would scare you or was on past your bedtime should be essential TV viewing.  Horror movies, SNL to make you laugh after you are scared are good options.  It’s your time travel trip so only you know what TV shows will transport you back in time to when you were a kid and should have long been asleep.  Once you have drifted off to a blissful night of deep kid like sleep, you can wake up back in 2020 refreshed or continue your time travel through Sunday.

Successful Stoner: Your Career and Your Cannabis Use

Responsible Marijuana Use

The negative stereotypes surrounding cannabis use still exist though thankfully most are being tossed aside in favor of facts and science.  Marijuana use was always thought to not be compatible with success.  In fact stoners have traditionally been viewed as lazy types who will never do much with their lives.  As anyone who has used cannabis knows, that is simply not true and for most people that use cannabis, it serves to help them be happier and more productive in their work.  Obviously this does not apply to all professions.  Stoned pilots and bus drivers, no thanks but for the majority of professions, responsible marijuana use can actually help them achieve success in their career.

Creative Types Needed

Being in a creative profession can be challenging in the best of times.  It is easy to get stuck or have a creative block and ideas that once seemed promising now seem stale and outdated.  Enter cannabis.  There are a variety of methods to jumpstart the creative process, you can go for a walk, meditate, distract yourself with funny animal videos on YouTube all the while hoping for that creative spark to ignite again.  Better yet, do all of these things and get stoned too.  Consuming cannabis alters your perceptions, specifically your sensory perceptions become more pronounced.  This change can very well be just what you need to think about an idea or a problem from an entirely different perspective.  It literally changes the way we traditionally “brainstorm”.  Just make sure to jot down or even record your ideas while you’re high as your memory may not be at its best.

It’s been said before but is worth repeating, to do well in your career, you must take care of yourself.  It seems obvious but people have a way of prioritizing everything else in their lives before themselves.  Responsible marijuana use is one of the best ways to not only fall asleep at a reasonable hour as opposed to tossing in bed well past midnight reviewing the problems of the day or overthinking what is coming tomorrow.  A cannabis session before bed can really change the way and most importantly the quality of your sleep.  Getting good quality sleep will do amazing things for your attitude about work and your ability to manage stress throughout the day.  Consuming cannabis for many people can act as an appetite stimulant.  Why not take advantage of this fact and stock your place with healthy snacks.  Sure you may fall victim to a last minute junk food DoorDash night but we are human after all.  If the majority of the food you have around is healthy, that’s what you will eat.  One of the most difficult things about establishing an exercise routine is starting one. Those first days and weeks until it becomes a habit are not easy to stick with.  Responsible marijuana use before an online yoga class or before a walk with your partner may just be enough of a motivation to get you through the first few weeks.  Promise yourself that you will at least do some basic stretches.  It feels amazing to stretch when you’re high.  Cannabis and exercise are great together!

Elevated Mood Leads to Increased Productivity

Ever try to do something when you’re in a terrible mood?  Of course we all have or nothing would ever get done in this world.  Whether it’s angrily scrambling those eggs for your kids in the morning to grudgingly preparing yet another PowerPoint for tomorrows’ stand up meeting, our mood affects the outcome of what we do. Just ask your kids how those eggs tasted. If your mood is great because you just smoked the best Sativa strain in existence, working on next year’s budget is no longer something that you will drag out far longer than necessary because it’s boring and uninspiring work, no you will find focus and interest in what you are doing and that means you will get more done, sometimes even a lot more. For many people, cannabis improves creativity and other important traits needed in the work place. Finding the right way and the right strains of cannabis to incorporate into your workday can take some trial and error but the process will teach you not just about which cannabis strains inspire you to be more productive at work but also which ones are better saved for after hours.  It’s research!

Managing Medical Conditions

Anyone who has ever experienced a migraine will tell you, it stops you in your tracks!  Nothing gets accomplished and until the pain begins to subside, you are not capable of getting much done.  Managing various medical conditions with responsible marijuana use can allow you to focus on work and your career rather than stressful trips to the doctor or dealing with often debilitating side effects of pharmaceuticals.  There are so many medical conditions that prevent or at least limit the ability to be our best selves in our careers.  Regardless if your medical condition is chronic pain, Crohn’s disease or social anxiety, cannabis can help alleviate some of the worst symptoms.  You may not be able to completely replace a pharmaceutical medication with cannabis but if you can manage your condition with a more natural remedy like cannabis, your overall health will improve.  Feeling better leads to finding gratification and even pleasure in your work. That alone is a recipe for success!

Fired for NOT Being High?

smoking a fat bowl

My first real job was working at a dry cleaners, early morning shift from 6 am until 2:30 pm.  It was the summer before I turned 16 and I needed to make money because, all teenagers need money for one thing or another but in my case I was saving up for a trip around the world when I turned 18.  Not being a morning person, it was a struggle to get up at 4:30 so I could arrive at work on time but I wanted that cash and since the owner was paying me under the table, no taxes!  I was a big wake ‘n’ baker at that age and getting up early didn’t change my routine of smoking a fat bowl of fairly shitty weed each morning.  Cannabis got me off to a good start every day and helped me end each day on a high note, yep pun intended.  While I don’t condone marijuana use for teenagers these days, I also live in the real world, enough said.

My first week at the dry cleaners I was “learning the ropes” so basically I learned a little bit of everything that went on at a dry cleaners.  My favorite job was to press the shirts.  I liked the steam, the sound was soothing and generally it was a chill job to do while baked.  Sadly that was not where the owner wanted me to work for the rest of the summer, he wanted me on the front counter.  Now since that time I have worked plenty of customer service jobs and realize some people are just assholes and there are no words kind enough or smile big enough to change that however at 15 I had not learned that life lesson yet.

The front counter was complete chaos from about 6:30 am until a little before 9 am, so essentially everyone was dropping off or picking up their clothes on the way to work.  The owner wanted me to be fast but friendly.  Easy enough, especially after a good cannabis session on the walk to work.  I never let a crazed or irate customer rattle me, why?  Because I was stoned and happy.  On my break or sometimes at lunch I would usually manage to either smoke another bowl or at least make quick use of my one hitter.  The results, good vibes all day.  The owner was more than just a normal micromanaging tool, he was on a serious power trip and most of the other people who worked there were terrified of him.  I suppose I should have been as well but I was too high to really care and since I was 15 with no intentions to make this my career, it added to my general lack of interest in his insane behavior.  I just continued being fast and friendly at the counter and he seemed, to not outright hate me.

Fast forward a few weeks later, on a Tuesday night, it happened.  I ran out of marijuana!  No smoking a fat bowl tonight. Totally out, no resin left to smoke, no secret nugs stashed away for emergencies, just out and no money until Friday.  I woke up the next morning at my normal 4:30 time feeling sad, a little stressed but I figured hey it’s two days, no big deal.  I knew by Friday night I would have plenty of weed again, I just had to get through the next two days.  I definitely felt more stress at work than the previous weeks.  The customers were the same but how I dealt with them took a nosedive.  The owner’s behavior, which hadn’t changed at all, made me so nervous by lunch time I considered quitting.  Now I understood why some of my coworkers would literally start to shake when he approached.  I counted the minutes until 2:30 and walked home feeling defeated.  One more day to get through.

Thursday was a repeat of the day before, I was off my game when it came to customer service and my ability to deal with the owner was not great.  By lunchtime he pulled me aside, handed me a white envelope (my pay in cash) and told me I could leave and to not come back!  What?  I asked him why but I was in such a state of shock I can barely remember his words.  Something about not being happy enough.  So yes I got fired and yes it was a humiliating experience as I considered myself a hard worker, still do.  The most important lesson though, never, never run out of weed! You can bet I was smoking a fat bowl that night.
